2016 Composer Competition Information

Theme: “The Music of Beethoven”

Event Dates: Saturday, May 14, 2016

Location: Jordan Kitts Showroom Recital Hall

Merrifield, VA 22031

Application Deadline: April 14, 2016

Application Fee: $30.00 per student (This fee will cover the cost of judges. All proceeds will be awarded to winners).

New Information Regarding the Competition:

  • Students may enter only 1 Category according to their age as of April 14, 2016.
  • Student must play 1 piece listed in their designated category from the Repertoire List. The books listed contain the original score, but another book may be used if the score is the same.
  • Students must perform from memory.
  • Students must bring the original music to the competition.
  • Judges may designate 1 Winner per category. There may be 2nd and 3rd place announcements in each category.
  • Teachers and parents WILL NOT be allowed in the competition room.
  • Students will be given a specific performance time. Teachers will be notified in advance of these times.
  • Teachers will be notified of winners within 2 days after the competition either be phone or email.
  • Winners will be announced in the SMC Newsletter, on the SMC Web Site and may be offered a performance opportunity.

Scholarship Awards

Monetary awards will be given to winners in each category. Teachers may contribute towards the scholarship with a monetary donation. Your name will be listed in the Composer Competition Program and the SMC Newsletter. If you wish to contribute $50 or more, you will be honored with a “Named Scholarship” (in your name) which will be given to the winner in the category of your choice. Checks should be payable to SMC and mailed to Marcia Chaplin.

Application Packet should include:

  • Completed Application - submit one application per entrant. Only current applications will be accepted.
  • One check for all studio entrants - Check should be payable to Springfield Music Club
  • One check for Scholarship Award - Check should be payable to Springfield Music Club
